Senior photos are one of the few parts of your senior year that you’ll keep forever. They end up in yearbooks, graduation announcements, family albums, and framed on your parents’ walls for the next 30 years.

But one of the biggest questions seniors (and parents) ask is:

“When should we actually take senior photos?”

As an Arkansas senior photographer, I see the same pattern every year: people start thinking about photos too late and end up rushing to meet yearbook deadlines.

The good news? There’s a simple timeline that keeps everything stress-free.

Here’s exactly when to start planning your senior photos in Arkansas and how to make sure you get the season and style you want.

Start Planning Your Senior Photos at the End of Junior Year

The best time to start researching senior photographers is late spring of your junior year.

Once school starts back in August, photographers’ calendars fill quickly. Seniors who wait until fall often have fewer date options or miss the season they wanted.

Starting your search early allows you to:

  • Book the season you actually want

  • Have time to plan outfits and locations

  • Avoid rushing before yearbook deadlines

Many seniors reach out May–July before their senior year, which gives plenty of flexibility.

Don’t Forget About Your Yearbook Deadline

Every high school has a yearbook photo submission deadline, and it often sneaks up faster than people expect.

Most schools set deadlines somewhere between October and December of senior year.

Since my turnaround time is 3–4 weeks, your session needs to happen early enough for:

  1. Editing and delivery

  2. Selecting your yearbook image

  3. Submitting it before the school deadline

A good rule of thumb:

Schedule your senior session at least 6–8 weeks before your school’s deadline.

This keeps everything relaxed instead of stressful.

The Season Matters More Than You Think

A lot of senior photo inspiration depends on the time of year the photos were taken.

When seniors show me their Pinterest boards, they usually fall into one of four seasonal styles.

Spring Senior Photos

Spring sessions in Arkansas have:

  • Soft Greenery

  • Wildflowers

  • Bright and Airy Colors

These sessions usually happen March–May and are perfect if you love fresh, colorful landscapes.

Many seniors who want spring photos actually book their session the spring before senior year. College Seniors typically book during this timeframe!

Summer Senior Photos

Summer sessions offer:

  • Golden/Dusty Sunsets

  • Lush Greenery

  • Lake or Water Locations

These typically happen June–September and are great if you want glowing, warm images.

The biggest benefit of summer sessions is getting them done early, which means zero stress about deadlines later.

Fall Senior Photos (The Most Popular Season)

Fall is easily the most requested season for senior photos in Arkansas.

You get:

  • Warm Golden Light

  • Changing Leaves

  • Cozy Outfits and Textures

Fall sessions usually take place late October through early November.

Because it’s the busiest season, these dates tend to book the fastest.

Winter Senior Photos

Winter sessions are underrated, but they create a unique look with:

  • Indoor Sessions

  • Sentimental Locations

  • Photos with Lifelong Friends

These usually happen December–February and can be perfect for seniors who don't need to worry about yearbook deadlines.

Split Sessions: The Best of Two Seasons

One of my favorite options for seniors is a split senior session.

Instead of squeezing everything into one day, you can divide your photos into two different seasons.

For example:

  • Spring flowers + Fall leaves

  • Summer lake photos + cozy autumn outfits

  • Winter editorial looks + colorful spring portraits

This gives you a huge variety of images that represent your entire senior year instead of just one moment.

Many seniors love this because they can include different outfits, locations, and moods.

A Simple Timeline for Senior Photos in Arkansas

If you want the easiest possible experience, here’s the timeline I recommend.

Spring of Junior Year

  • Start researching photographers

  • Begin saving inspiration

Early Summer

  • Book your session

  • Plan outfits and locations

Summer–Early Fall

  • Take your senior photos

Fall

  • Submit yearbook photo before the deadline

This timeline keeps everything relaxed and gives you the most flexibility.

Final Advice for Seniors (and Parents)

The biggest mistake people make with senior photos is waiting too long.

If you want a specific season, location, or photographer, the earlier you plan, the better your options will be.

Senior year moves quickly. Your photos should feel like a meaningful way to mark the moment, not another thing squeezed into an already busy schedule.
